“Zoolander 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to Zoolander (2001), directed by Ben Stiller, has arguably some of the best cameos ever.
Ben Stiller returns to helm the sequel, which like its predecessor, pokes fun at the fashion industry. This time, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and his friend Hansel (Owen Wilson) must investigate the murder of celebrities killed while working the famous Zoolander “Blue Steel” look.
Some of the most anticipated celebrity cameos in the movie are by Justin Bieber, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tommy Hilfiger, Susan Sarandon, John Malkovich, Kiefer Sutherland, Katy Perry, Billy Zane, Valentino Garavani and Anna Wintour.
One of the most talked about cameos is from one of the reigning Canadian singer/songwriters of today, Justin Bieber. As seen in the trailers, Bieber, who plays himself, is assassinated in an alley. But just before his death he posts a selfie on social media posing with Zoolander’s famous “Blue Steel” look before he drops dead.
Apparently, Bieber’s death was originally more brutal and grisly and Stiller had to cut five seconds at the request of the censors.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s role as an androgynous model called “All” has already generated much criticism against the actor with many saying he is ridiculing transgender people. Except for his signature blue eyes, Cumberbatch with bleached eyebrows and center-parted hair is a far cry from Sherlock Holmes. ‘All’ is the representative of the modern modelling world where Zoolander and Hansel find themselves uncomfortably out of place.
Susan Sarandon, Kiefer Sutherland and John Malkovich also appear in the movie. However further details about their respective roles haven’t been released yet.
Katy Perry will also be appearing as herself and will sing a line according to Vogue, probably spoofing her own public persona like the others who appear as themselves.
Billy Zane, famous for playing Lee Falk’s comic-book hero “The Phantom” and as the baddie Caledon ‘Cal’ Hockley in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” will most likely be appearing as himself, according to Bustle.
Fashion designers Tommy Hilfiger, Valentino Garavani and Vogue US editor Anna Wintour are also going to spoof themselves and the fashion industry, at the same time highlighting it.
According to the Vogue article, Anna Wintour has the most number of lines than the other cameos. According to Stiller, Wintour loved the first Zoolander movie.
“Anna was always supportive of the first movie and kept on asking me over the years whenever we crossed paths ‘When are you going to make a second one?’,” Stiller had told Sydney Morning Herald.
“So when we finally decided to do it, I reached out to her and said ‘Hey, I’m going to do this.’ She was just an incredible partner and really helped us get a lot of people to be in the movie, and was kind enough to be in the movie,” Stiller said about Wintour’s involvement in the movie.
“Zoolander 2” arrives in cinemas worldwide beginning February 1 this year.
