The Vikings Season 4 midseason finale left viewers with a lot of questions and possibilities. The siege in Paris left Lagertha heavily wounded after Aslaug brutally stabbed her. In the time jump that showed Ragnar reuniting with his grown-up sons in Kattegat, Lagertha was not in the picture. Which begs the question: is Lagertha dead?

Vikings creator Michael Hirst confirms Lagertha’s fate in an interview with TV Guide.  Hirst gives his assurance that Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) will live in the second half of Vikings Season 4, especially after receiving a serious threat from a feminist collective in New York.

“[They] wrote to me a couple years ago and they said, ‘We don’t’ care how many of the male characters you kill off, but if you do anything to Lagertha, you’re in trouble.’ So I’m very careful about that warning,” Hirst reveals.

He adds that Lagertha is too important a character to kill in the series.

“She is the soul of the show and I need her,” Hirst explains.

However, Lagethera’s return will shock viewers as the changes in her physical appearance will render her almost unrecognizable. Although Lagertha may bear deep scars from the war in Paris, she remains as one of the show’s pillars. Vikings Season 4 will even show a more powerful Lagertha whose actions will be pivotal to the show’s development.

In past episodes, the Seer prophesied that a woman would rule Kattegat. This suggests that Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) and Lagertha will once again go head to head.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hirst reveals that the “battle for Kattegat becomes a real one,” and it appears that Aslaug and Lagertha’s rivalry will be at the center of it.

“I’d also say you should never underestimate Lagertha,” Hirst teases.

Aslaug may have drawn first blood, but Lagertha is definitely gunning for the ultimate victory.

The remaining 10 episodes of Vikings Season 4 is expected to air sometime in June or July.
