With Elena on a sleeping spell in the current season of “The Vampire Diaries,” her boyfriend Damon Salvatore has to endure the pain of losing her. We all know that Nina Dobrev’s not coming back. So, how has her exit affected the dynamics of the hit TV show? Actor Ian Somerhalder finally talked about it.

Speaking to Variety, the actor revealed how “The Vampire Diaries” changed after actress Nina Dobrev left. Ian said,

“I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena (Nina Dobrev) was gone. And I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn’t a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula.”

According to Ian Somerhalder, the departure he’s talking about will be observed on the show’s 10th episode – which is the best in the current season.

So what’s the episode about?

“It was a Civil War episode. I was covered in dirt and gunpowder with things blowing up around me. From a Monday to a Friday, I lost six pounds,” Ian admitted.

Yes, the 10th and best episode of the season is all about Damon Salvatore.

And although the episode centres on his character Damon, Ian Somerhalder made it clear that he wasn’t biased.

“The way the story was put together … every artisan from set to producers to wardrobe to everyone was just so on-point,” Ian added. He pointed out that the episode was “well executed.”

In a video interview with News with a Twist studios, Ian Somerhalder mentioned that filming it “almost killed him.” He revealed that he was thankful for his wife, “Twilight” star Nikki Reed, who took care of him when he filmed the episode.

“But it looks phenomenal. The story behind it really go back in time to see where Damon became Damon,” Ian admitted.
