Hilde Kate Lysiak, a nine-year-old child reporter who runs her own newspaper, faced criticisms from some locals after she covered a suspected murder case in her locality in Pennsylvania, USA. The local residents complained about the girl getting involved in serious crime reporting, saying it is no longer “cute.”

Hilde, who is from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, started her newspaper named the Orange Street News when she was seven years old. She became the child reporter of her locality and soon built up a readership for her newspaper.

Despite that, her recent work on a suspected murder a few blocks away from her home got adults criticising her website and on other social media sites.

Following a tip-off from one of her trusted sources, she followed the news to the site of a murder, interviewed the police and the neighbours. She posted the story and a video clip on her website later that day and was the first one to break the news.

A short while after, Hilde’s Facebook page and Twitter channel overflowed with negative comments, asking her to play with dolls and have a tea party. Some even questioned her parents’ judgement on allowing her to do such jobs, the News.com.au reported.

“I am disgusted that this cute little girl thinks she is a real journalist,” one of the comments read. Another reader, Sally Grouse wrote, “I usually enjoy your stories Hilde but this … Perhaps you are too young to understand the difference between decency/respect and sensationalism.”

The little journalist posted another video answering back to her critics.

“Because of my work, I was able to inform the people that there was a terrible murder hours before my competition even got to the scene,” she said in the video. “In fact, some of these adult-run newspapers were reporting the wrong news or no news at all. All the while, the Orange Street News was out covering the event.”

“I know this makes some of you uncomfortable and I know some of you just want me to sit down and be quiet because I’m nine but if you want me to stop covering news then you get off your computer and do something about it,” she added.

Hilde ended the video, saying, “There, is that cute enough for you?”

Her father said that she is a really motivated child and doesn’t have a lot of fear. He added that all she wants is to report real news, the Stuff.co.nz reported.
