UAE has announced that it plans to establish the first inhabitable human settlement on Mars by 2117. They hope to lead the international effort in realizing the old human dream, which is to explore space and land people on other planets.
“Human ambitions have no limits, and whoever looks into the scientific breakthroughs in the current century believes that human abilities can realize the most important human dream,” says Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in a statement.
Mohammed adds that this new project is expected to benefit the future generations. In 2015, the UAE revealed its Mars Probe mission that will land the very first spacecraft from the Arab world on Mars by 2021 now they announced their plans of human settlement. The new project is called “Mars 2117 Project.”
While this may seem too distant in the future, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan says that the goal in the near future is to develop skills and capabilities of Emiratis. He adds that whatever findings they discover would be made available to all international research institutions. They also hope that the project would improve life here on Earth, serving in the aspect of energy, food, and transportation.
According to them, the first phase of the project would involve focusing on the preparation of human cadres. This would help facilitate the arrival of people to Mars in the coming decades. They also aim to develop a team composed of Emiratis. However, they are willing to collaborate with scientists and researchers from other countries.
The project would also mean that they must develop a faster mode of transportation for the mission. They also aim to develop a scientific visualization that will give them an idea of what the human settlement would like on the Red Planet. This integrated scientific visualization would also give them an idea of how life on Mars would be like, which will include transportation, energy, food and other necessities.
In the press release, they also say that a team of Emirati engineers and another group of researchers and scientists have already set a concept for the human city on the Red Planet earlier. This provided them a view of the lifestyle one would expect on Mars that included how the infrastructure, food supply, power production and transportation would work on this planet. This also allowed them to see the materials needed to use for the Martian city’s construction.
