The Season 7 finale of The Vampire Diaries left a lot of open doors and loose ends, particularly regarding Damon and Enzo’s predicament. While fans can expect a darker path for these two characters in The Vampire Diaries Season 8, have they really seen the last of Damon and Enzo’s humanity?

Following the events of the Season 7 wrapper, it is presumed that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) are possessed by the monster they encountered inside the Vault. It said that this creature strips away what remains of its victims’ good qualities. With that said, Damon and Enzo are likely to head a killing spree in The Vampire Diaries Season 8, mercilessly killing innocent victims and hanging bodies in a rumored warehouse. With Bonnie (Kat Graham) having lost her magic she, together with Caroline (Candice Accola-King) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), will find it difficult to locate and stop the two rabid vampires.

Speaking with IGN, The Vampire Diaries cast member Candice Accola-King reveals that “Bonnie, Stefan, and Caroline are going to have their work cut out for them.” She adds that Alaric (Matthew Davis) plays an important role “in bringing Damon and Enzo back from the dark side and … finding them and waking them up.”

This indicates that hope is not lost for Damon and Enzo as the monster has not completely taken over their bodies. They could still somehow be reached by something or someone strong enough to overpower the creature that has possessed them.

“What we really wanted to do was give Damon a chance to act on ‘Bad Damon’ again, but do it in a way that we can always forgive him for,” The Vampire Diaries writer Brian Young tells TV Guide about Damon’s situation. “Season 8 is going to be rough for Damon and Enzo because bad s**t is going on. But Stefan, always believing the best in his brother, believes Damon is still in there.”

With rumors that this might be the last outing for The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev is expected to return as Elena and is presumed to be the key element that will bring back Damon and Enzo. In past seasons, Elena was the one to bring out the good in Damon and prevent him from doing wicked things.

There’s been a lot of talk about whether Elena will return to the series, and it appears that she might do so to save Damon one more time.

The Vampire Diaries Season 8 will return to The CW this fall.
