Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo knows that the internet loves him. However, even if he is the most searched for male athlete on the net, one celebrity still boasts a bigger social media following. Singer Taylor Swift has scored more social media goals than Ronaldo, across popular social media platforms.
According to research done by Apple Tree Communications and published by Sport, Cristiano Ronaldo has amassed 238 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. While no other male celebrity can compete with the football phenomenon, Taylor Swift easily edges him out.
Across the three most popular social media platforms, the controversial singer is being followed by 246 million people worldwide. Ronaldo only manages second place in the social media battle, but it’s hardly a loss. No other athlete makes it to the top 5.
Taylor Swift’s rival, Katy Perry landed in third place (219 million), while her close friend Selena Gomez made it to fourth (205 million). Another American singer, Rihanna, completes the top 5 with 190 million followers.
Last week, Ronaldo made it clear that he’s aware of his status as the most searched for man on the internet. He pointed out this fact, after fellow football player Xavi Hernandez threw shade at him and compared him to Lionel Messi. Xavi said that only Real Madrid fans think that Ronaldo is better than Messi.
Ronaldo brushed away the comments and said that he isn’t affected by what Xavi says. He said that he knows how many fans he has and that he’s already won the FIFA Ballon d’Or 3 times, a feat that speaks for itself. Back in August, Ronaldo was also hailed as Europe’s Best Player by UEFA. He is also a strong favorite to win the Ballon d’Or again, after a strong season with Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team.
