“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” by director Gareth Edwards is supposed to herald a new era of a slew of anthology spin-offs of the “Star Wars” cinematic universe that began in 1977. However, it seems that the movie is in trouble and the release date might be delayed.
The Daily Mail is reporting via Page Six that Disney bosses are unhappy with how the movie has shaped up and has ordered re-shoots. “The execs at Disney are not happy with the movie, and ‘Rogue One’ will have to go back into four weeks of expensive reshoots in July,” Page Six has claimed it learned from a Hollywood source. The site had requested for a comment from Gareth Edwards’ representatives but hadn’t received a reply by the time the article was published.
This is a very serious turn of events indeed, especially so because “Rogue One” isn’t “testing well,” as per the Hollywood source. This means the movie was screened to select audiences who weren’t impressed with what Gareth Edwards’ had done with the story by John Knoll.
Page Six also claimed to have learned from a Disney source that “The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting.” The reason for this, explains the Disney source, is the high bar set by J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” He added that Disney has “a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.”
The idea of re-shoots is understandable because the fate of “Star Wars” anthology movies, in particular, rests on the success or failure of “Rogue One.” The untitled Han Solo movie which stars Alden Ehrenreich is the second anthology feature in the series. It wouldn’t bode well for Disney’s plans of expansion if Edwards’ movie bombs at the box office. A delayed release would be better than a poorly done movie.
For now, “Rogue One” has a release date of December 16 and stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, and Riz Ahmed among others. It will reportedly feature Darth Vader in a major role.
