“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is to be the first in a slew of soon to come anthology movies that expand the “Star Wars” universe and the franchise itself, now acquired by Disney from creator George Lucas. According to actor Riz Ahmed, who will appear in “Rogue One,” the movie will be “a bit different” from the other films so far.
Speaking to Hey U Guys in the red carpet at the BAFTAs, Ahmed voiced out his opinion on this. “What Gareth Edwards has been bringing to ‘Rogue One’ is this incredible organic, loose, kind of raw feeling. When he talks about ‘Rogue One’ he’s spoken about it in terms of a war movie, comparing it to other war movies, and I think that what it will bring is just a fresh pair of eyes on a familiar world. And I think that’s really exciting, we’re doing something a little bit different to the other films and hopefully people are ready for that and embrace it.”
Cinemablend notes that it is not the first time it’s been called that. In fact, terms like “gritty” have been tossed around, and that it’s even being compared to Vietnam War movies like “Hamburger Hill.” It is rumoured that Darth Vader will appear in the movie as “Rogue One” takes place right before the first film.
While the Episode movies chronicling the Skywalkers will continue with Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII and Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX, the anthology movies will branch off and focus into some of the backstory behind the characters and events of the main films.
While Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One” will deal with a daring plan by the Rebel Alliance to steal the plans for the Death Star as seen in the 1977 film directed by George Lucas, a young Han Solo origins movie is also slated to be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. More will undoubtedly follow.
The story of “Rogue One” was conceptualised by ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll who drew the attention of Lucasfilm to the opening crawl of the first “Star Wars” film.
“It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…” read the initial crawl made iconic by the films.
