Disney Chief Bob Iger has revealed that a Han Solo spinoff is in the works. Iger, who was talking at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference, said the movie will also star Chewbacca in the spin off.

“We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy,” Iger told those present at the Conference, states The Wrap. “And that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there’ll be possibly be more thereafter,” he added.

It is being speculated that the spinoff will delve into the pasts of favourite Star Wars characters—Han Solo and Chewbacca. The movie is expected to reveal their earlier lives and might even enlighten viewers on how the pair met up. Rumours are that there might be some darkness there, which has made their bond so strong. However, nothing is confirmed so far. What is confirmed, however, is that the the movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, a “Star Wars” veteran.

According to the Independent, the cast too is being finalised and the choices for a young Han Solo have been narrowed down to a dozen that include Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Dave Franco. However, there is still no news about who will play the role of a young Chewie. Variety reveals that the studio has tested actors between the ages 17 and 34 and the production house is currently smoothing out NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) and test deals.

Gizmodo explains that should this movie get released, it will unravel one of the biggest mysteries of “Star Wars.” How did Han Solo and Chewbacca meet, and why is their bond so strong? Considering the pace at which the work is on, the movie will hit the screens by mid-2018.
