When “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” premiered and the film stirred a massive reaction from moviegoers, forecasts suggested that it is only a matter of time before Episode VII of the beloved franchise will be able to surpass earlier record-holders, including “Avatar’s” hold on being the number one movie of all time.

Now, reports suggest that that time has come.

The Hollywood Reporter details that “Force Awakens” was able to surpass “Avatar’s” box-office numbers in just a span of 20 days after the film’s official release. With this recent development, “Force Awakens” is now officially the highest-grossing film of all time in North America.

The website reports that “Force Awakens” will surpass the $760.5 million earned by James Cameron’s “Avatar” because on Tuesday alone, the J.J. Abrams masterpiece grossed about $8 million. The recent numbers brings “Force Awakens” total domestic earnings to $758.2 million.

Still, it is important to note that the “Star Wars” reboot only grabbed “Avatar’s” spot in North American numbers.

Cinema Blend emphasizes that “Force Awakens” is still more than a billion dollars away from snatching “Avatar’s” global box-office record. According to the website, “Avatar” grossed $2.78 billion worldwide while “Force Awakens” holds only more than a billion dollars in worldwide box-office numbers.

Nevertheless, the website highlights that there is a good explanation on why “Star Wars” earned lower-than expected figures globally: the absence of the Chinese market.

Cinema Blend details that the mandatory blackout on international product in the country pushed “Star Wars” to open later in the said region than the rest of the globe. The film will officially grace Chinese theaters on January 9.

With this, the website suggests that the film may get a surge in their global earnings once Chinese moviegoers check out the film.

“Star Wars: Episode VII” debuted last December 18 and continues to show on theaters worldwide.
