Latest Sherlock season 4 cast updates revealed that “Harry Potter” actor Toby Jones will be joining the upcoming run. While producers have yet to reveal his specific role, they were generous enough to tease that Jones will be playing a villain in season 4.
“I’m excited and intrigued by the character I shall be playing,” the actor said reported by Radio Times. The Independent noted that his character will be introduced right away and will be seen in episode 2.
Series co-creator Stephen Moffat dished on Jones’ role and shared how excited he is to have the English actor on board. “Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle’s finest villains.” Co-creator Mark Gatiss, on the other hand said, “We’re thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family. I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish.”
Speculations have run wild about the newest “Sherlock” season 4 cast member, with many claiming that he might have a connection to Sherlock’s arch nemesis, Moriarty. “Could he somehow be connecting back to Moriarty, with the hint that ‘ghosts of the past rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson’ possibly signalling some sort of return for the villain?” The Independent noted.
Meanwhile, previous “Sherlock” season 4 cast rumours claimed that Moffat hinted a major cliffhanger that “will leave viewers desperate for Season 5.” This might have something to do with Moriarty’s return as some “Sherlock” Season 4 spoilers have already suggested. Moffatt did dismiss rumours about Sherlock’s arch nemesis’ return, but many believed that Moriarty will return as a zombie, Parent Herald noted.
No official release date has been set as of writing, but previous reports have already pegged the new season to premiere in early 2017. However, Moffat is allegedly hopeful to have the new season air on BBC in December 2016.
