Rihanna has designed several pairs of Star Trek-inspired sunglasses for Dior.
According to People magazine, the “Needed Me” singer has teamed up with the accessory department of Dior to create her own sunglasses with a distinct futuristic and metallic style. The singer has also turned model for her own collection.
Rihanna shared on Instagram a photo of herself wearing the eye shades and captioned it: “When you reppin da PHUCK out yo own shit!!!”
According to WWD, Rihanna visited the design house last year to study its vintage frames. She was inspired by a pair from 2000 and credited La Forge from Star Trek for the idea of her design. “I’ve always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together,” RiRi told WWD.
The “Bad Romance” hitmaker has been hands-on in making the sunglasses. She selected the pair from a range of vintage frames, chose the materials and lenses used and ensured that the shades looked right on her face.
The aviator-style sunglasses have thick style of frame. The collection, named “Rihanna,” will be available in six colors. Five of the colors – silver, pink, blue, green and red – are for US$840 (AU$1170 approx) each. It is much cheaper as compared to the 24-karat gold-plated pair which costs for US$1,950 (Au$ 2700 approx). These fashionable items will be available exclusively in Dior stores from June.
Last year, RiRi was declared as the first black woman to represent Dior. She is also the first of Dior’s ambassadors to ever do a design project for the fashion house.
This is the second collaborative project between Rihanna and Dior. Last year, Rihanna collaborated with Steven Klein for a short film, which was shot inside Versailles. It featured her in Dior sunglasses, bags, and she was seen wearing clothes from the Esprit Dior collection.
