Professional Australian surfer Mick Fanning has split from Karissa Dalton, his wife of eight years. The Australian surfing legend was all praises for Dalton when he announced the news via his official Facebook page on Sunday evening.

Fanning said he has “nothing but love and respect for this woman” and also uploaded a picture of them as a couple. The rumours about the couple’s split kicked off some time back but the duo refuted the claims back then. The 34-year-old said that he did not want to accept at that time that they have separated because the couple was still trying their best to live together and save their marriage.

“Karissa has stood by me since we first met in 2004. We have shared plenty of great times but more importantly she has helped me through some of the toughest moments in my life, especially this past year,” Fanning said, referring to the time when he was attacked by a shark during an event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. It was hard for Fanning to get back into water after the frightening shark attack but things became even tougher when his brother Peter died.

Fanning then went on to explain how they separated after working to save their marriage. “There has been some speculation about our marriage coming to an end over the past six months,” he wrote.

“We refuted those claims because we were both committed to working things out since we separated last February. After giving it our all though, late last year we made the tough mutual decision to move on separately,” Fanning added.

He also wrote about how “weird” he felt to give details about his personal lives on social media but said it was a necessary step to “eliminate any speculation about this decision.” The Aussie also added that he will still remain close to his wife and “there’s a lot of love there.”
