Police described the Orlando shooting gunman as a “cool and calm” person while sharing the final moments inside the popular gay club before the SWAT team stormed it.

Twenty-nine-year-old Omar Saddiqui Mateen, according to police, called 911 thrice while he holed up in the Pulse nightclub’s washroom with several hostages following his initial attack. The officers said he stayed “cool and calm” while speaking to law enforcement about his further plans of carnage. According to News.com.au, the police also said that the conversation included the mention of the Boston Marathon bombers. Orlando Police Chief John Mina also confirmed that the gunman vowed to pledge his “allegiance to the Islamic State” while he had a conversation with police negotiators.

“Based on the calls, he was cool and calm,” Mina said during a press conference on Monday morning. “He really wasn’t asking for a lot. We were doing most of the asking.”

In addition to this, FBI Director James Comey claimed that the shooter called for around half an hour the first time after opening fire. He called again the second time and talked to a dispatcher and hung up the call while the dispatcher called him back. According to the director, the shooter said that he was doing everything for the ISIL leader during his calls.

US President Barack Obama called the Orlando shooting matter a “homegrown extremism” case. The president spoke to the reporters at the White House where he claimed that the gunman was inspired by radical materials that are available online. On Monday, reports have revealed that Mateen made threatening comments regarding his connections with terror groups to co-workers at a local courthouse around three years ago.

“First, he claimed family connections to Al Qaeda,” Comey said on Monday as quoted by NY Times. “He also said he was a member of Hezbollah.” Hezbollah is a Shiite group that remains in conflict with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. “He said he hoped that law enforcement would raid his apartment and assault his wife and child so that he could martyr himself,” Comey added.
