A couple of days ago, gigantic image sharing platform Instagram had announced to its users that it may eventually see a couple of changes such as a new algorithm for its photo and video feed. This news made the social media community nervous, with many of Instagram’s superstars asking their followers to turn on notifications for them if they want to continue their support. However, a spokesperson for the platform says that its users don’t need to panic.

“You may be surprised to learn that people miss on average 70 percent of their feeds. As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This means you often don’t see the posts you might care about the most,” reads the company’s blog post regarding the change in algorithm.

In an email sent to The FADER, Instagram says that there’s really no need to panic over the new algorithm change since it still requires a lot of testing for it to push through. “This is not being implemented tomorrow—we still have weeks, or even months, of testing to go. Currently, the test groups are very small. When we roll it out broadly, we will definitely let the community know,” the company explained in the email.

The social image sharing platform failed to make proper announcements regarding the official timing of the roll out during its first blog post, saying only “in the coming months” as the schedule of the implementation. The results are evidently viral in Instagram, with its most popular users seeking more visibility by asking their followers to turn their notifications on.

It’s still unknown how the new algorithm will work when it hits. Instagram’s most popular users may see a big drop in their social media reach, and it’s not doing them any favours. Instagram is now a platform for brands to advertise their products through accounts that have already gained a massive following. Should they lose their audiences due to the algorithm, they lose their value in turn.
