The NBA Finals 2016 is having an interesting subplot which involves the “bromance”, between Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and football great Lionel Messi.
The question now is will Messi show up on Sunday, in Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors to watch and show his support for his friend Stephen Curry?
Friendship began online
The mutual admiration between the two sports stars started online and in the media and has quickly blossomed into an exchange of gifts and respect, according to CBC Sports.
With Messi heading to San Jose to join Argentina for the Copa America on Friday, the possibility that he will be on Sunday around Game 2 of the NBA Finals in Oakland is anybody’s guess.
“Soccer will be the main focus while I’m in the Bay Area, naturally, but part of me is also hoping to meet Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Seeing him play is magical.”, Messi said in an interview by Sports Illustrated.
Warriors Coach Steve Kerr the Matchmaker?
Warriors coach Steve Kerr is the man to be credited if in fact the visit occurs.
It is reported that upon taking the reins at Golden State last year, Kerr showed videos of Messi and Barcelona to inspire his team to play a more fast-paced, possession-oriented game.
In an April post-game interview Curry revealed that they have seen how Barcelona plays. “The things they do in every game, and their playing style is a lot like ours. Both teams like to move the ball and each player is involved in each play”, Curry added.
The First Move
It was Stephen Curry who initiated a friendly gesture to Messi back in December when sent Messi a signed number “30” jersey to Spain to congratulate him on reaching 30 million Instagram followers.
Messi then returned the favor once Curry reached 10 million.
Messi and Curry are even the same age of 28 and are married or partnered to their childhood sweethearts.
