The Philippines will host the Miss Universe 2017 pageant, reports have finally confirmed. Reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach will have the chance to crown her successor in her home country. Meanwhile, the Philippines will host again the prestigious pageant after 20 years.
Reports started as Pia revealed her “actively campaigns” for it to happen. During her press conference in Manila, she admitted that she would love to crown her successor in the PH if she had it her way.
The Philippines hosted the pageant in 1974 for the first time. Then reigning queen Margie Moran passed the crown to Spain’s first pageant winner Amparo Muñoz. The last time that the country held the pageant was in 1994 wherein Sushmita Sen took home India’s first victory. The country’s then candidate Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach made it to the Top 6.
Earlier this month, reports revealed the on-going talks between the Philippines and the organization. The Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed the reports. Officials were very hopeful as hosting such pageant will be good for the country’s image.
Now, the DOT is eyeing six possible locations for the said pageant, GMA News reported. However, the finale will definitely be held in the country’s capital city, Manila.
Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo revealed that Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, Cebu, Palawan are among their choices. Locals and foreigners love to visit these known tourist destinations. Davao City is the hometown of PH President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. On the other hand, Cagayan de Oro is witness to Wurtzbach’s childhood.
A week ago, Duterte and Wurtzbach met at the Malacanang Palace in Manila. From then, their meeting signified the high chance of the country hosting Miss Universe 2017. Rappler reported that the event’s estimated budget of $11 million will come from private sponsors.
