Michael Carrick will sign an extension of his contract with Manchester United, Perth Glory CEO Peter Filopoulos confirmed.
Before the confirmation, Perth Glory has been wooing Michael Carrick to make a switch into the Australian A-League.
Perth Glory saw an opportunity of getting the 34-year old midfielder through Carrick’s best friend, Richard Garcia. He was the best man to his wedding. Perth Glory captain Garcia also played side by side with Carrick during their West Ham United stay.
Michael Carrick has been with Manchester United for 10 years. Due to the managerial confusion towards the end of last season, he was keen to put an end to his Manchester United career.
As Jose Mourinho took over the club, he elected for the experienced midfielder to stay. He sees the veteran midfielder as a huge help in bringing back Manchester United to its former winning glory.
Meanwhile, Perth Glory CEO Peter Filopoulos conceded their club’s stake on the veteran midfielder gracefully. He calls it a long-shot opportunity, according to a FourFourTwo report.
“Perth was an option for Michael Carrick as he was going through what he was going to do in his career had he not landed a new signature with Manchester United. We understand he’s now secured an extension with Manchester United so that’s off the table,” Filopoulos explains.
The Independent further gives strength to Filopoulos’ claim over Carrick’s career decision. In the report, former Man Utd player Paddy Crerand has gone on record with Mark Sullivan. He said, “You know something as well which happened today that nobody has mentioned? And I’m delighted he has signed another contract: Michael Carrick. He’s signed a contract for another year hasn’t he?”
Though the statement was cloaked in rhetoric, one thing is certain. Manchester United fans are just waiting for the formal announcement of Michael Carrick’s contract extension with the Red Devils.
