Elena Dugan could be the next MasterChef Australia 2016 winner after her delectable sorbet impressed the judges.

Elena won the last challenge that gave her a guaranteed spot in the finals of season eight.

The 32-year-old teacher along with fellow home cooks – Brett, Matt, and Mimi – were presented with a table of beautiful local produce, including pork, lamb, chicken, quail, olive oil and vegetables and more. The challenge was all about the grapes, in celebration of one of the best produce of California. Each contestant has to cook one dish with grapes as the main ingredient in a span of 90 minutes.

Elena took the risk on her dish. When she is about to add lavender to her sorbet, judges George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan expressed their concern of her use of lavender. The judges warned her lavender could make her sorbet tastes stronger.

Despite the warning, Elena decided to trust her instincts, and it paid off. When she finally presented her dish to the judges, they were impressed and completely blown away with the taste. “How bloody good was that?” Calombaris said. The chef described the dessert as food heaven. Matt Preston also commented that it’s as good as any other dish he has eaten in California.

Meanwhile, the remaining contenders for the finals week spots battled it out in food truck challenge. The Blue team, composed of Matt, Elise, and Trent, won the challenge against the Red Team (Brett, Mimi, and Harry).

Brett was then eliminated after the pressure test against Harry and Mimi.

They were given 90 minutes to prepare four plates of their dream dish. Mimi cooked an elaborate dessert of chocolate aero mousse. Harry made a lobster crudo, while Brett presented the judges with sous vide pork fillet.

Mimi wowed the judges with her dessert. Mehigan even said it was one of the season’s best. Harry’s dish also received praises from the judges, same as Brett food. However, the judges were disappointed with Brett’s sauce. Guest judge Curtis Stone’s said it had a residual bitterness.

The trio prepared their dishes at Stone’s Beverly Hills restaurant.

MasterChef Australia Season 8 airs every Sunday to Thursday at 7:30 pm on Ten.
