Las Vegas police said on Sunday night they were responding to a “major accident” near the hotel and casino where the Miss Universe pageant was held, reported Reuters.

One person died and 37 injured, seven critically, after a woman ran her car up onto a sidewalk on the Las Vegas Strip near Harmon Avenue, police said.

According to Las Vegas Now, some of the victims were taken to University Medical Center for treatment. Officials there say some of the patients appear to be visiting from Montreal, Canada.

University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said men and women were among the 11 adults injured in the incident on the famed Las Vegas Strip. Many of the injured spoke French, indicating that they could have been tourists.

Cohen said the hospital, a level-one trauma center, also received another patient who died, but she could not confirm whether the death was related to the same accident.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper said a car ran into a throng of pedestrians outside the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, injuring as many as 27 people.

That tally could not be confirmed. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department provided only a brief statement and could not be reached immediately.

Police warned people to avoid the area and said the strip had been closed to traffic in the vicinity. Further details were not immediately available.

The woman left the scene, police said. Police did locate her and she is currently being tested for impairment.

The Las Vegas Strip is closed to traffic in both directions from Harmon Avenue to Flamingo Road.

Antonio Nassar, who was at the Strip, described a disturbing scene to CNN.

“The car rolled right in front of me. By the time I looked over to the right, all you could see was [her] driving away and people were bouncing off the front of the car, you can hear it,” Nassar told the affiliate.

“The windshield is smashed at this point. She rode the sidewalk, she came to a stop at the Paris intersection, people are punching into the window … she accelerated again and just kept mowing people down.”
