Australian citizen Justice Damond was unexpectedly shot after calling for 911 to report a suspected assault that was supposedly near her home. The 40 year old woman was shot multiple times from the passenger seat of a police car, which caused an outrage from the public who are wondering why this tragedy happened. Her death has been labeled a homicide and an investigation is seemingly under way, though her family is understandably angry over the fact that this happened.

Mr Noor, the policeman that shot her, is currently under paid administrative leave and hasn’t been popular with residents even though he has only been an officer for two years. According to ABC, the officer already has two complaints filed against him, so the unnecessary shooting isn’t going to help him out in anyway. Damond was in her pajamas of all things when she went to the police car, so one has to wonder what kind of danger the police was in if she was wearing that.

“How can a woman out in the street in her pyjamas seeking assistance from the police be shot like that?” asked Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

“Yes, we are demanding answers on behalf of her family and our hearts go out to her family and all of her friends and loved ones,” he reiterated. It’s definitely a tragedy and the police have a lot to answer for, though details of the shooting are really slim outside of the aforementioned phone call and confrontation. Noor has yet to release an official statement on the tragedy, so we will have to wait and see what his reasoning was.

300 friends and family members of Justice Damond gathered for a quiet vigil in her honor. Candles were lit and flowers were released into the ocean to “honour, love and respect” the life of an “extraordinarily kind, funny, smart and loving woman.”
