These past days, rumors have been circulating about who will be the next actor to play 007 and replace Daniel Craig. Now, Sam Mendes is believed to be quitting the director’s chair.  This news leaves many of us wondering whether the next “James Bond” is really happening. Or has the franchise put a stop to the movie as there is no one good enough to walk in Craig’s shoes? Is he just simply irreplaceable?

Mendes, thus far, has directed two Bond films – 2012’s Skyfall and 2015’s Spectre. It seems he is unwilling to take up the next project. Relevant sources reveal that he recently conveyed it was time for someone else to take over. Has he lost interest in the project as Craig will no longer be in it?

It looks like the 50-year-old is following the footsteps of Daniel Craig, who last year notably claimed he’d rather slash his wrists than play Bond again. Earlier, a report published in the Daily Mail revealed that Craig even rejected a huge amount to be cast again as the next 007.

“I’m a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters,” Mendes communicated to the audience at a literature festival in Wales on Saturday.

The British director’s departure might encounter a mixed response from fans and critics alike who felt Skyfall was the 54-year-old film franchise’s masterstroke. The Sunday Morning Herald Entertainment reports.

The “American Beauty” director has also been linked to rumors of replacement for the next Bond. However, Mendes tactfully handled the gossip rags saying, “I can guarantee that whatever happens next, it will not be what you expect.” He continued, “The truth is, here’s the headline: It is not a democracy. It is not The X Factor. It is not the Euro Referendum. It is not a public vote, you know. Barbara Broccoli chooses who is going to be the next Bond, end of story. And without that, there would have been no Daniel Craig because public support for Daniel was zero.”

Meanwhile, the rumor mill has proposed a number of contenders for the role, including Jamie Bell, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Adian Turner. Yet nothing appears to be set at this moment.

The franchise is even reported to be giving Bond a powerful female off-side (including Lea Seydoux). A recent buzz exposed that ‘X-Files’ star Gillian Anderson is one of the most eligible for the role.
