The floodgates opened after KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared that Apple was busy working on a 4-inch smartphone, unofficially dubbed as the iPhone 5se.

Naturally, there has been some debate over what the device will be called with suggestions ranging from iPhone 7 Mini, iPhone 6c to iPhone 5se. While the title is still up for debate, what is being widely accepted is the features that this variant will sport.

In terms of the design, early speculations suggested that the handset will follow in the footsteps of iPhone 5c and land with a polycarbonate back. However, recent reports hint at an all-metal body in line with the iPhone 5s.  A previous report on MyDrivers, along with a the M.I.C. Gadget leak all indicate a metal body. Additionally, Kuo also believes that the iPhone 5se will sport an all-metal body.

The speculated spec-sheet reveals features such as Bluetooth 4.2, voice over LTE, Live Photos, Always-On Siri and  32GB or 64GB storage capacities. However, according to a report on 9 to 5 Mac, iPhone 5se prototypes feature an A8 chip, while some also have an A9 chip under the hood.

Kuo made it clear that to differentiate the 4-inch model from the iPhone 7 line, it may arrive sans the 3D touch. But if it lands with an A8 chip, this also directly rules out the possibility of the handset boasting the neat Live Photos feature as seen on the iPhone 6S series. Some of the earlier rumors on the 5se, also hinted that the handset may possess a sapphire display, as seen on the higher-end Apple Watch variants.

The excitement surrounding the iPhone 5se is palpable, probably because fans are expecting to witness the launch of the mini variant next month. Along with the mini handset being introduced in March this year, fans are also anticipating the unveiling of the new Apple Watch and iPad Air 3 at the event.
