After posting a cryptic message on Twitter last month hinting her departure from Grey’s Anatomy, star Sara Ramirez, who plays Dr. Callie Torres, officially bows out from the hit medical drama. The news comes after the finale episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 aired.

A few weeks ago, Ramirez raised speculations about her departure from the show when she tweeted “That’s a wrap for Doctor [Callie Torres].” The actress kept mum about the issue until recently when she confirmed that she’s not returning for Grey’s Anatomy Season 13.

Ramirez took to Twitter to announce her exit from Grey’s Anatomy after 10 years of playing the show’s leading orthopaedic surgeon.

“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some welcome time off,” Ramirez said in a statement Thursday, according to Variety. The 40-year-old actress also sent her love to Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, saying she’s been “so incredible to work for.” She also gave a shout out to co-star Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the cast and crew.

“I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family,” she concluded her statement.

Rhimes also commented about Sara Ramirez’s exit, describing the actress’ performance as Dr. Callie Torres an inspiration to her and the “millions of fans” that tune in to the show every week.

“I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara.  She will always have a home at Shondaland,” Rhimes said, as quoted by E! Online.

In the final episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 12, Dr. Torres got her own happy ending. After a dicey custody battle with Arizona over their daughter Sofia which resulted in her losing, Arizona made peace with Callie by buying tickets for them to take Sofia to visit Penny. She also promised Callie they would still have joint custody over Sofia.

Sara Ramirez was first introduced as Dr. Callie Torres in Grey’s Anatomy Season 2. At the time, she was still a senior orthopaedic resident at Seattle Grace Hospital until she rose up the ranks to become an attending orthopaedic surgeon. She was the love interest of Dr. George O’Malley, played by T.R. Knight. She was initially intended to be a recurring character in several Grey’s Anatomy episodes until she became a regular Grey’s Anatomy cast member by the show’s third season.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 is already being green-lit by ABC and there a lot of buzz about what’s coming next. The biggest news, however, is the potential return of Sandra Oh as Dr. Cristina Yang. She previously said she’d be “more than happy to come back.” If Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 turns out to be the show’s last outing, a reunion with the feisty Dr. Yang might be likely.

The finale of Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 aired May 19, Thursday.
