Hodor’s death is one of the most shocking moments of Game of Thrones Season 6 so far. He died, holding the door, to protect Bran from the White Walkers and their army of wights. Given that White Walkers turn most humans they kill into wights, it is possible that Hodor himself will become a wight.

Or at least, that’s what Romper thinks so.  “The Night King is smart and he’ll know that Hodor… could be useful,” the news site suggests. “With Hodor left in the clutches of the White Walkers and the Night King, chances are high he’ll be turned [into a wight].” Will Hodor really join the Night King’s army? Will he be sent by the Night King to go after Bran? These theories have yet to be confirmed.

However, the show’s director Jack Bender did hint that the White Walkers might really have plans for Bran’s now dead friend. While discussing his original vision for Hodor’s death, Bender suggested that the army of the dead might try to do something to Hodor behind the scenes. “I still wanted to make it scary enough,” he told Observer. “See Hodor surrounded and engulfed by these skeletal arms and long fingers, that were eventually going to smother and kill and rip him apart, or whatever they were going to do that we didn’t see.”

The director also explained that he pulled back a little bit with that scene “to not let the horror of it overwhelm the emotion of losing that character and making it really land on the idea that he was sacrificing himself so his friends could get away.”

What does Game of Thrones Season 6 still have left in store for fans?  You can find out when the series airs on HBO this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET (Monday at 11 a.m. ACT).
