Game of Thrones Season 6 is about to end. All season long, Cersei Lannister can’t seem to catch a break. She has lost almost everything leading up to the finale. Will she lose her brother and lover Jaime, too?
In last week’s episode, Cersei and Jaime found themselves in different parts of Westeros. Cersei was in King’s Landing. Jaime meanwhile had a reunion with Brienne in the Riverlands. Nothing untoward happened between the two friends. However, according to IGN, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau himself confirmed that there is an unspoken attraction between his character and Brienne. “The subtext is so clear,” the actor said. “You constantly feel this subtext of a weird fondness and attraction between them that they never act on, and could never act on. It’s intriguing.”
Coster-Waldau also commended the writers for his reunion with Brienne. “The set up is brilliant,” he explained. “We cut in and you just see these two people standing very stiffly and very correctly and trying to avoid talking about anything really personal…[it] is so clear that they’re happy to see each other, but they don’t know how to recognize that… Jaime’s been with his sister his whole life and that’s the love he knows…but [Jaime and Brienne] would never recognize the thing that there is between them because it’s just beyond imagination — they would never allow themselves to go to that place.”
However, as the Daily Beast pointed out, it might take more than Brienne for Jaime to abandon Cersei. In that same episode, Jaime did profess his love for her in more ways than one. “I love Cersei,” he said. “You can laugh at that if you want, you can sneer, it doesn’t matter. She needs me. And to get back to her, I have to take Riverrun.”
The Game of Thrones Season 6 finale will air on HBO before the end of June.
