The premiere of Game of Thrones season 6 will begin with an unlikely centerpiece in the name of Melisandre. Aptly titled “The Red Woman,” the first episode will introduce us to a rather downtrodden Melisandre who, in a desperate need to cling to power, might resurrect a deceased fan favorite.
Game of Thrones loyalists are most certain that Jon Snow will not stay dead. There are several theories that make this a possibility. However, bets are on Melisandre using her supernatural powers to bring Jon Snow back to life.
In the season 5 finale, Melisandre returned to Castle Black at the time of Jon Snow’s death at the hand of Night Watch mutineers. Stannis Baratheon had fallen in the war, leaving Melisandre with nothing but self-doubt.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carice Van Houten dished out on Melisandre’s character development in season 6 and how her role will be pivotal to the series.
“The arc of my character is finally going into a different direction. It’s changing and I really like it. We see her from a really different side of her now,” Van Houten said. “We see somebody whose whole belief system is tumbling down. She’s completely confused, and I really like to play that. After all the security and strength and pride, now we see something completely different. I’ve been really waiting for this moment.”
Carice Van Houten’s Melisandre was the subject of fans’ wrath for sacrificing Princess Shireen (Kerry Ingram) in season 5. The upcoming Game of Thrones season, however, might be a point of redemption for the Red Priestess and the fans are willing to form an alliance with her.
“When [Jon Snow] died, a lot of people who wanted to kill me after episode 9 came back and said, ‘We’ll forgive you if you resurrect Jon Snow!’” Van Houten added.
According to International Business Times, a sneak peek video of the first episode of Game of Thrones season 6 aired on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” The clip showed Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) together with Jon Snow’s direwolf Ghost and his Night Watch supporters protecting Snow’s body from an attack by Ser Alliser Thorne and Snow’s murderers.
Although Melisandre is not in the picture, one would ask: Why would they go to such lengths to protect the Lord Commander’s dead body? Ser Davos and Melisandre didn’t always see eye to eye in the past, but he could convince her to perform a ritual to revive Snow. There’s a good chance she would agree, considering that she needs to prove her worth again.
Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere on HBO on April 24.
