The police and health professionals in Queensland have issued an urgent warning after a drug that is around 10,000 times more powerful than morphine has been detected in Brisbane. The drug is called Carfentanyl, a very toxic and strong synthetic based drug that can kill a person even in just doses as low as 0.002 milligrams.
The drug is commonly used to sedate elephants and other large animals. According to the Courier Mail, the authorities from the Australian Border Force have intercepted this potent drug at a mail center in Brisbane.
Because of this, the Police Minister Mark Ryan was prompted to issue a warning. He adds that the discovery of the illegal drug in Queensland is very concerning and authorities are advised to tell people to not take any risks with this potent drug.
“A small dose has the capacity to kill — this is not a drug anyone should be taking a risk with,” points out Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker. “Make no mistake, these are not party drugs. These are dangerous drugs and it’s not a matter of if it will kill you. This drug will kill you.”
According to the Detective Superintendent, Carfentanyl is relatively new in the country. There has only been one other instance that the drug has been detected in Sydney in December of last year.
However, Wacker says that they still do not know how the drug might have been sold. They also do not know if Carfentanyl has been sold in its pure form or mixed with another type of drugs and marketed as the “latest hook,” Wacker adds.
Queensland Police Minister Ryan also says that the Government would be collaborating with the police authorities to make sure that this deadly drug is kept off the streets. Experts say that even those people who come into contact with this drug through skin contact or their eyes are already at a great risk. As of now, the police and Australian Border authorities are continuing their investigation to determine where the drug came from.
Carfentanyl has also been researched as a chemical weapon, the NPR states. Police are always urged to handle it with care. Zoos keep the drug as a tranquilizer. On the other hand, drug dealers mix it with other drugs like heroin to increase their profit.
Apparently, Chinese companies have been selling this all over the world for less than $2,000 a pound. US drug dealers have been eager to buy it from them at this price. Now, China has listed carfentanyl as a controlled substance. This decision has been supported by US officials.
