Fans can expect a couple of surprises from the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special 2016.

Prior to its official premiere of Season 10 in 2017, Whovians can look forward to the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2016. The upcoming episode promises to be yet another fun treat to celebrate the season of cheers. Last year, showrunner Steven Moffat brought back the character Alex Kingston in The Husbands of River Song. The special episode brought back memories of the glory years shared by the Doctor and River.

Aside from her, last year’s episode also welcomed Nardole played by Matt Lucas. Eventually, it paved the way for his inclusion as a semi-regular on Doctor Who Season 10 to everyone’s delight. However, prior to his appearance in the first episode, Whovians will see him again in this year’s Christmas special. Moreover, it appears he would be the Time Lord’s companion.

“The Doctor won’t have a temporary companion this Christmas, and essentially, that space will be taken by Nardole. He’s not a companion as such but it’s not as if he doesn’t play a similar role,” a source revealed. Yet fans need not fear about the absence of Bill played by Pearl Mackie in the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2016. Her grand debut is set for the first episode of Season 10. Instead, Whovians can look forward to the presence of a guest character who happens to be a superhero.

A bit of mystery surrounds the addition to the Christmas Special. Radio Times revealed the show cast 33-year-old actor Justin Chatwin in the role. Whovians might recall he was in War of the Worlds as the son of Tom Cruise. The publication described Chatwin’s character as brash and speaks with an American accent. He might also have possess a number of dark secrets. Thus, would he be a friend or foe to the Time Lord?
