David Beckham is always left awestruck whenever he meets Queen Elizabeth II. This, the footballer admitted in an upcoming documentary for the Queen’s 90th birthday.
It might be difficult to imagine the football star being starstruck by anyone. He is after all married to Posh Spice. But, according to Mirror, Beckham is still very much “starstruck when it comes to the Queen.” He said he even gets “emotional” every time he meets her. “Meeting the Queen…it doesn’t get any better than that,” he explained. “You can feel the emotion. I can personally feel the emotion…because I just love everything about our Queen and what she represents…I’m privileged and proud that we have the number one leader.”
The Manchester United legend has met the Queen on several occasions. But, according to him, collecting his OBE remains “one of [his] proudest moments.” Beckham was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to football in 2003. “That day was special for me because I brought my grandparents with me,” he said. “It made me proud that I could bring them…somewhere that they worshipped for their whole lives.”
Over a decade later, he teamed up with the Queen for a special project. According to Mail Online, he joined forces with the Queen to recognise exceptional Young Leaders in the UK.
Beckham’s interview, meanwhile, will be featured in the documentary, “Our Queen at Ninety.” The documentary is set to kick off Her Majesty’s birthday celebrations. Aside from the footballer, several members of the Royal Family were also interviewed for the documentary. Among them is the Duchess of Cambridge, who revealed how “thrilled” Elizabeth II is at being a great grandmother to George and Charlotte.
The Queen will turn 90 on April 21. You can catch “Our Queen at Ninety” on Sunday night on ITV.
