Fans just assumed Frank Castle is the Punisher on “Daredevil.” Frank Castle, after all, is the Punisher’s real name in the comic books. However, will the TV series have a different take on things? Will the show’s third season really have a different Punisher?
Frank showed up last season for the Hell’s Kitchen story arc. The Punisher is known for being a staunch vigilante. He was not above committing crime in his self-imposed war on crime. He is brutal. He killed, kidnapped, extorted and tortured criminals. Frank did a lot of those things on screen last season. However, according to Cinema Blend, he might not be the same as the Punisher from the comic books. Or at least, actor Jon Bernthal himself thinks he isn’t the “real” Punisher.
“The Frank Castle you find in this story is not the Punisher,” Bernthal told Awards Daily. “He’s reeling from the loss of his family. He is driven by rage… He is on a singular mission to find these people who took his family from him, and do it as brutally as possible.”
The same thing did motivate the Punisher in the comics at first. However, the actor pointed out his character’s still consumed by his desire for revenge. Frank Castle, he said, still has a long way to go before he fully becomes the Punisher from the Marvel source material. “I think when you’re talking about characters like these, the way they fight… what’s motivating the fight is very important,” he explained. “Beating someone up to drag them into jail is different than someone who is exercising his rage on people.”
Frank has already gotten revenge last season. Cinema Blend thinks he might be well on his way to becoming the “real” Punisher. “Perhaps now that Frank has gotten to avenge his family… [he] can take his crusade to fight criminals on a larger scale outside of his own vendetta,” the film blog said.
The third season of “Daredevil” will premiere soon. In the meantime, you can binge watch the show’s first two seasons anytime. Both season are available for streaming on Netflix.
