Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to be back on the pitch as soon as possible especially with the La Liga season opener coming up. However, he asks for patience as the Portugal captain recovers from his knee injury.
“Obviously he wants to be back but we need patience and for him to be calm. He will be back with us soon in Madrid,” said Zidane. According to The Guardian, Zidane spoke to the media after Real Madrid defeated German giants Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Both European clubs are in the United States for the International Champions Cup, an off-season friendly competition.
While the team is busy making pre-season preparations, Ronaldo has been forced to go on an extended holiday. He has been off the pitch since suffering a knee injury in Portugal’s final match in the UEFA Euro 2016 Championship in early July. Zidane had already previously declared that he won’t be called to suit up for Real Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup match against Sevilla on Aug. 9.
The team’s opening match of the Spanish La Liga season takes place only 12 days after the Super Cup. Zidane is still doubtful that Ronaldo will be fit enough to take part. However he speaks about looking at the long season ahead, not just one match. “We must continue because it’s going to be a long campaign and we have to continue to work in this manner. We need to get better as a team,” he said.
Despite the setback, the Ballon d’Or contender has been making the most out of his forced holiday. He has been spotted frolicking around Miami with friends and a blonde beauty.
Meanwhile, the team has been busy training without some of their biggest stars. Apart from Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Pepe have also been given extended holidays. All three are expected to rejoin the squad this weekend, ahead of Tuesday’s Super Cup match.
