Could Cesc Fabregas turn his back on FC Barcelona and move to Real Madrid? The Chelsea star is reportedly looking for a move back to Spain after failing to start against West Ham United in Chelsea’s Premier League opener.
According to Goal, Cesc Fabregas has been offered to the European champions. The player’s representatives reportedly reached out to Real Madrid in a bid to secure a deal before the summer transfer season ends. A transfer to Madrid could prove to be controversial, considering Fabregas’ deep roots with the club’s biggest rival, FC Barcelona.
Fabregas is a product of the La Masia football academy in Barcelona. Aside from that, he had played for the Barcelona first team in 2011-2014. During his three-year tenure with the Catalan giants, he was instrumental in winning titles against Real Madrid. The question is, why isn’t he opting to re-join Barcelona instead of becoming a turncoat?
The Mirror reports that Barcelona already made the decision to rule themselves out of the option to re-sign Fabregas. The club had already spent about US$58 million on Portuguese star Andre Gomes. After making a major investment on Gomes, they could no longer make room for a prodigal son.
While there is no news about whether Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is interested, it is very clear that one coach is not. New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has left Fabregas on the bench in the club’s opening match against West Ham. Fabregas’ eagerness to find himself a new club, even if they are his lifelong rivals, could be better than sitting on the bench.
Conte favored his new signer N’Golo Kante, who started alongside Namanja Matic. Conte is eager to shake things up at Chelsea in an effort to revamp the team and quickly recover from a disastrous 2015/16 season. In the process, it appears that Fabregas has found himself in the outskirts of the new management’s plans.
