Will Iron Man die in the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War” movie? Will directors be forced to kill him off if Robert Downey Jr. ever exits the cinematic universe?
“It’s almost impossible to replace Robert,” director John Russo told Forbes. “He’s the biggest movie star in the world. One close up from Robert is worth another actor’s entire performance. He’s incredibly gifted and insanely talented.” But the director knows it’s possible for the actor to exit the franchise.
“I think if and when he is done with the character…you will find that Iron Man might disappear for a while. I think the only way that you could reboot…is to give a generational gap that would allow another actor to…have a chance to redefine that character without the enormous spectre of Robert hanging over it,” Russo explained. But he thinks the Marvel Cinematic Universe will do just fine without Tony Stark. “There are so many characters in the Marvel universe,” Russo added. “[Characters] that can pick up the ball and run…through the next phase or two before you need to see Iron Man again, frankly.”
Movie Pilot concurs. “That certainly makes sense from the perspective of continuity,” the film blog said. “All of the Marvel movies have excelled in creating one cohesive narrative…so it wouldn’t make too much sense to swap out such a key figure.”
So Iron Man would probably not die in “Avengers” or “Civil War.” Team Iron Man member, James Rhodes, might not be as lucky, though. He was shown “seemingly lifeless” in the latest trailer for “Civil War.”
“Captain America: Civil War” is set to hit theatres May 6.
