The first upset of day 3 starts with Svetlana Kuznetsova as she was sent packing by Kateryna Bondarenko, 92 seeded player from Ukraine. Kuznetsova is in great form. The former number 1 won the Sydney title after defeating world number 2, Simona Halep. She even played brilliantly against Daniela Hantuchova in the first round, but could not grip her form against the Ukrainian.
She had 20 unforced errors compared to Bondarenko’s 14, and 17 winners against Bondarenko’s 28. Kuznetsova won’t be happy with the score line either. She is out of the tournament with a 6-1 7-5 defeat.
Apart from Kuznetsova, so far the expected winners are winning. Sharapova showed some classy, yet, dominating tennis when she thrashed number 105 seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich by 6-2 6-1 in an hour and 11 minutes.
The weather was another opponent, it seems. With the temperature soaring at 40 one time, drops down immediately and starts raining. Today was the first time the roof over Rod Laver Arena was closed due to the rain. But nothing could stop Sharapova’s victory.
Also, Serena Williams glided past against Taiwan’s Su-wei Hseih with ease. The defending champion and world number 1 proceeds one step closer to protecting her crown. She knocked down Hseih by a quick 6-1 6-1 victory. Serena hit 26 winners to Hseih’s 9. The champ is sure to knock everyone out it seems!
Meanwhile, men’s number 7, Kei Nishikori, yet again proved why he is in the top 10. A straight sets victory against America’s Austin Krajucek, the Japanese superstar hits 40 winners against Krajucek’s 14. It took him one hour and 53 minutes to secure a 6-3 7-6(3) 6-3 win.
In addition, there are other winners who have proceeded to round 3. They are Roberta Vinci, Belinda Bencic, Lauren Davis, and David Goffin, among others.
