“Arrow” season 4 revealed a mystery grave towards the end of the premiere episode. The identity of who’s concealed within it is revealed in episode 18 entitled “Eleven Fifty-Nine.”

“Arrow” bosses admitted that they weren’t sure who would be killed off when the flash-forward mystery grave scene was shot. “We started off this year with the promise of a death,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim said. However, the choice eventually became clear over time, TV Line reported.

“When we worked our way through our various creative choices, we realised that the thing that will give us the most pop going into the end of the season, into next season, unfortunately, would be revealed in Wednesday’s episode,” Guggenheim added.

Guggenheim’s fellow EP Wendy Mericle revealed the death of somebody important, E! Online reported. However, “Arrow” fans had not expected it to be Laurel Lance aka Black Canary, Variety noted.

Guggenheim and Mericle, along with stars Katie Cassidy who played Laurel, and Paul Blackthorne, spoke to Variety about the death. Blackthorne plays Quentin Lance, Laurel’s father.

” We knew that it would enrage a lot of people. We’re not [blind] to the shipping, and we’re not [blind] to the internet controversy … But we’ve never made decisions on the show, creatively, because of the internet,” Guggenheim said.

Cassidy revealed she only found out about the choice right before they shot the court scenes. However, Cassidy agreed that it made sense.

“It made sense to me, creatively, that we’ve told Laurel’s story; [it] has come to an end in the ‘Arrow’-verse. Again, it’s television, and I always say anything can happen,” Cassidy pointed out.

Could this signal her character’s reincarnation on “The Flash”? Earlier news circulated that she would make a guest appearance on the show. Death is not a surprising concept on “Arrow” because the show is notorious for bringing the dead back to life.
