Actress Olivia Munn might be playing one of the bad guy’s henchmen in “X-Men: Apocalypse.” But, she thinks her character, Psylocke, actually had a lot in common with one of the most iconic heroes in the franchise.
Munn recently sat down with Cinema Blend to talk about her character’s origin story. She revealed that Psylocke is “much like Wolverine in the comics” in some respects. “He’s got these really amazing abilities…and he was manipulated by a lot of people to do their bidding,” the actress explained.
She said Psylocke’s experience was similar. “I know it’s not really shown in the movie that much. [But] it’s something that I talked to [producer] Simon Kinberg and [director] Bryan [Singer] about…why she would go with [Apocalypse]. The backstory of Psylocke that I brought into it…was that she lost her entire family,” Munn said.
“She has these really great abilities, these powers, and she’s been manipulated by many different leaders because she’s been looking for her righteous path and looking for a family again.”
Psylocke is one of the four horsemen of the movie’s titular villain. The “X-Men: Apocalypse” star tried to explain why her character might want to ally herself with a baddie. “That’s what she sees in Apocalypse – yet another maybe righteous leader,” the actress said. “She’s looking for someone who will show her the way, and looking for a family.
Meanwhile, according to USA Today, Munn would really like Psylocke to one day work with Deadpool. “That would be a really cool thing to do,” she said. “It would definitely be cool to see Deadpool and some of the other’ X-Men’ characters gather for an ‘X-Force’ movie. I think that’s what the whole world is coming to — everybody unites together, right? It’s never just one character anymore. We all just become one movie.”
