Will the Phoenix rise again in “X Men Apocalypse” movie?
Movie Pilot seems to think so. The site speculates that director Bryan Singer could “be setting the stage to tell a proper Phoenix saga.” The Dark Phoenix Saga is an extended X-Men storyline in the fictional Marvel Comics Universe. It is centered around mutant Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force.
In an interview with IGN, director Bryan Singer described the origins of the upcoming film’s titular antagonist.
“The introduction of a character like Apocalypse, that could have powers rooted from another world, could be the beginning of a larger story Singer is getting ready to tell,” Movie Pilot reported. The site suggests that, with Apocalypse, Singer can tell a “proper Phoenix saga story.” This is since the saga is a “heavy galactic masterpiece that could easily span across a new trilogy.”
Introducing Apocalypse could also lead to the introduction of “some of the X-men’s more otherworldly characters,” the site said. Will film fans finally get to know the Shi’ar empire?
According to Cinema Blend, producer Simon Kinberg also talked about redoing the Dark Phoenix Saga storyline in future X-Men films.
“I think everything that hasn’t been told from First Class and Days of Future Past is up for grabs going forward. So, it would absolutely be a story that we could tell in a different way,” he was quoted as saying.
The Phoenix saga storyline was previously alluded to in “X2.” “X-Men: The Last Stand” contained elements of the storyline. In the movie, the Phoenix was portrayed as Grey’s repressed dual personality.
The producer, however, clarified, that the “new timeline” is now considered “canon.” The new timeline is brought about by the events of the most recent X-Men film,”Days of Future Past.”
“[Apocalypse is] not leading, necessarily, toward exactly where we found…the X-Men at the beginning of X1…[Y]ou can’t fully change the course or current of the river but you can just divert it a little bit. And that’s what we diverted a little bit,” he explained.
Sophie Turner was previously recast as Jean Grey. Turner is known for playing Sansa Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is slated to hit theaters May 27th.
