“The X Factor” UK Season 12 final episode only managed to pull in about 5 million viewers. After the alarming news on the show’s ratings, there were rumours on its possible cancellation. New reports mentioned that judge Nick Grimshaw and presenter Caroline Flack were asked to leave the show.
According to Telegraph, Grimshaw was not axed but rather, he decided not to continue as “X Factor” judge. A spokesman revealed that the Radio One presenter feels another season isn’t for him.
“After careful consideration, Nick’s decided to rule himself out as a judge on this year’s X Factor. He loved working on last year’s series alongside Rita, Cheryl and Simon but it was very much a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He remains a massive fan of the show and is looking forward to watching it this year,” the spokesman told The Sun.
Insiders have already expected Grimshaw’s decision, The Sun reported. A source admitted, “Nick made the decision to jump before he was pushed and that is completely understandable.” One Direction member Louis Tomlinson is rumoured to take his place.
“Louis Tomlinson is very likely to replace Grimmy. He agreed in principle to the job while assisting Simon Cowell during the judges’ houses round last year,” as mentioned on Mail Online.
Meanwhile, Caroline Flack, one of the show’s presenters, was reported to leave the show too. According to Telegraph, a source pointed out that Olly Murs and Flack’s combination “didn’t work out.”
“Caroline’s a really experienced broadcaster but the combination of two presenters just didn’t work out this year. It’s unfortunate for her, but the decision gives her the opportunity to take on a major West End role, which is something she’s wanted for a long time,” the source explained.
Both Murs and Flack were criticised for their presenting skills. During the season’s Week 3 of Live Shows, Murs announced the result before the big revelation. After reports claiming that Simon Cowell told judges who to save, reports on the show being “fixed” surfaced.
But will “X Factor” UK be cancelled next season? Telegraph noted that ITV is thinking of putting the show to “rest.” There are reports that the show might be replaced by “The Voice.” Amidst reports, Simon Cowell’s SyCo label spokesman denied rumours of cancellation.
