The “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie grossed more than $570 million at the box office, but the owners of the book version seemed to lose their love with Christian Grey.
An Oxfam charity bookshop in Swansea, Wales has amassed the world’s biggest pile of “Fifty Shades of Grey” books. This prompted the manager to asked people to stop donating the bestselling erotic novel or its sequels to their shop.
The Guardian wrote bookshop manager Phil Broadhurst posted on Facebook: “We appreciate all your donations, but less Fifty Shades and more 60s and 70s vinyl would be good.”
Broadhurst told Metro UK, “There are a lot of people obsessed by Fifty Shades of Grey… We get people bringing in new copies coming in all the time. Enough is enough.”
The bookshop has received “literally hundreds” of copies of the novel over the years that it piled-up so incredibly that shop employees went ahead and built a fort out of them, Mashable reported.
Independent added that the shop has resorted to handing them over to an off-location warehouse owned by Goldstone Books from which they can either be sold online or recycled.
Meanwhile, other charity bookshops are not reporting the same situation as the Oxfam charity bookshop. “We get our fair share,” said an employee at a British Heart Foundation shop in Edinburgh.
“I don’t even think we’ve got any in,” says the manager of a charity shop in Liverpool.
Red Cross bookshop in New Romney in Kent reported that only two or three copies of “Fifty Shades of Grey” have been donated to them so far, The Guardian reported.
The newspaper added Oxfam published a list of its most donated authors between 2009 and 2012. Author Dan Brown topped the list.
“I think Dan Brown is still popping it, actually, but [Fifty Shades] is up there,” said David Taylor at the Oxfam bookshop in Salisbury.
Metro noted that the first novel in EL James series was sold more than 125 million copies worldwide.
The second instalment of the erotic novel –“Fifty Shades Darker” – has started filming in Vancouver, Canada. The sequel is scheduled to be released in 2017. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will reprise their roles as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively.
