You might have heard that WhatsApp is launching a new version of WhatsApp Gold. It’s a scam. Hackers are trying to fool users with their latest ploy. Here’s all you need to know about their latest trick.

Termed ‘exclusive version’

WhatsApp Gold has been pitched as an ‘exclusive version’ of the app, and a message is making the rounds, saying that the version is not available to all users and can be installed only through invitation.

Users are asked to click on a website

The message contains a website link of www.goldenversion.com. You will be asked to click on the link to download the Gold version of the app. It is a trap.

WhatsApp Gold for Celebrity

According to the message, the so-called ‘WhatsApp Gold’ is used by ‘big celebrities.’ It has extra features of the video calling, ability to send 100 images at once, free calling, ability to change WhatsApp themes and more, notes BT.com.

Hackers’ delight

Upon installing it, hackers can steal your data and track your movements. It will also infect your phone with malware, thus enabling the hackers to take your data/track your movements and activity, notes The Independent.

Similar trap called ‘WhatsApp Plus’

This is not the first time that such duplicate app has been created for hacking. Previously, messages regarding ‘WhatsApp Plus’ were making rounds. WhatsApp has denied releasing the app and has warned about it on its FAQ section.

“WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorized by WhatsApp,” says the FAQ section.

The section went on to say that “The developers of WhatsApp Plus have no relationship to WhatsApp, and we do not support WhatsApp Plus. Please be aware that WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to 3rd parties without your knowledge or authorization.”

It advises users to “uninstall your application and install an authorized version of WhatsApp from our website or Google Play. After the 24-hour countdown ends, you will be able to use WhatsApp.”
