High flying Benteke led Liverpool will take on West Ham this Saturday as they look to extend their winning run to 3 games.
Liverpool are coming from two 1-0 victories that have suddenly boosted the morale in their dressing room after a run of poor form earlier in the year. Benteke, the £32m striker who has not been Jurgen Klopp’s first choice centre forward, has scored the winners on both occasions. He scored the winner on Boxing day against Leicester and recently scored the winner against Sunderland that ended Liverpool’s 2015 excellently.
“It is not the best we can do, we know this, but we had to fight. We knew about Sunderland’s situation. Everyone wants to end the year positively” Klopp told BBC.
However, Liverpool are going to face a tough test when they face West Ham away after Daily Mail reported that playmaker Dimitri Payet looks set to make a return.
West Ham has been on a steady decline after Payet’s injury – together with blows for Winston Reid, Diafra Sakho and Victor Moses. Slaven Bilic’s men didn’t win a game in two months until their 2-1 victory over Southampton last game week. Ex-Liverpool player Andy Caroll, who is also coming back from a huge injury lay off, scored the winner after heading the ball from close range.
Payet has not played since November after picking up an injury against Everton. He is the highest scorer for the club this campaign with 5 goals to his name. The news of the recovery will be a big boost to Bilic as he looks to break into the top 5 of the premier league.
The last time these two teams met, West Ham hammered the Reds 3-0 producing a master class of counter attacking football at Anfield.
