For everyone else, “Warcraft” might just be another video game adaptation from Hollywood. For director Duncan Jones, however, it’s much closer to his heart. His movie received the approval of his father, the famous late pop icon, David Bowie.

“I showed him an early cut of this and showed him some of the effects shots,” Duncan Jones, best known for “Source Code,” told Jen Yamato of The Daily Beast in an interview. Jones said that after David Bowie saw some of the scenes from “Warcraft,” he “was all excited for me and happy that I was doing the thing that I enjoyed doing in my life.”

The Daily Beast mentions that Jones first played the Warcraft game while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from College of Wooster in Ohio. On the surface, “Warcraft” is about a war between humans from the mythical world of Azeroth and Orcs from Draenor. The Orcs face extinction as their world is dying. They find an escape portal to Azeroth and decided to colonize it. The humans of Azeroth now face destruction at the hands of the powerful and hulking warrior race.

However, at the core of the story is a tale of survival and protecting loved ones; a tale of families. “You know, for everyone else he was one person. For me, he was my dad. And he was always interested in things I was working on,” Jones talked about his father David Bowie, who passed away in January from liver cancer.

Duncan and his wife also went through some tough times while “Warcraft” was under production, noted The New York Times (NY Times). His wife, Rodene, was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to get a double mastectomy done. “My film started and ended with cancer,” Jones said during a recent interview, notes NY Times.

Nevertheless, there is a silver lining in the horizon for Duncan Jones and it’s not just the release of his movie. It’s the forthcoming birth of his first child. The movie, unsurprisingly, deals with fathers and sons and even has an orc couple preparing for the arrival of their first child. Despite being a fantasy tale, it mirrors the real-life relationships and struggles of the director. His father David Bowie departed and now he will become the father himself.

“Warcraft” releases in the United States on June 10.
