Why You Should Vote for the Australian Netball Diamonds for the 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA) is an awards show that honours last year’s best TV shows, movies, actors, musicians, books, social media personalities and sports stars as voted by the public. This year, the Australian Netball Diamonds have been nominated for the show’s ‘Favourite Sports Team (AU/NZ)’ category.

“For women in many developing countries sport is a pastime that is considered at best a luxury and at worst a distraction from their roles in the home,” says retired Australian netballer Liz Ellis (in her article for The Sydney Morning Herald last year).

We should celebrate the fact that this is not the case in Australia.

In fact, our broadcasting of Australian women’s sports is finally improving too – slowly. Last year we saw Aussie Women’s football live on mainstream TV.

Canberra Capitals coach Carrie Graf said in an ABC article last year that this is important because “our young people can see that women can lead, they can be coaches, they can be star athletes.”

But your kids shouldn’t just vote for the Diamonds in order to increase an appreciation of women’s sports – vote for them because they deserve it!

Last year, the sparkling team won two major titles: the Netball World Cup in August, which gained record crowds of over 16,000 people, and the Constellation Cup in October, which gained a WA-record crowd of 12,365.

In both competitions, the Aussies beat the New Zealand Silver Ferns – the only other women’s team in the award show’s sports category.

The Australian Wallabies and the New Zealand All Blacks are also in this category. The All Blacks beat the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup last year.

The winner will be announced when the show airs on the Nickelodeon channel, March 13th.
