Is “Vampire Diaries” about to get cancelled? Actor Ian Somerhalder seems to be afraid that the show that made him famous is now “tanking.” His social media posts reportedly suggest the show’s “looming” cancellation according to Celebrity Dirty Laundry,
TV Series Finale also reported a dip in ratings for the show. “Vampire Diaries” Season 7 only got an average of 0.53 in the 18-49 demographic. Last week’s episode gave the season its lowest rating yet at 0.4.
According to TV Series Finale, ratings are usually the “best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air.” The 18-49 demo is particularly important. The higher a show’s ratings are in that demo, the better the chances for its survival. “Vampire Diaries” Season 6 got a 0.72 average rating in the 18-49 demo. A total of 1.54 million total viewers tuned in last season. This season saw the show losing hundreds of thousands of viewers.
Celebrity Dirty Laundry also pointed out that the show has been moved to the “kiss-of-death” 8 p.m. Friday time slot. The 18-49 demo aren’t usually home to watch TV at that time slot.
So is this the last we see of Mystic Falls?
News of the show’s cancellation has yet to be confirmed. However, Somerhalder does seem to be more gung-ho than usual in promoting the show this season.
This isn’t the first time Somerhalder expressed concern over possibly getting cancelled. “We just want to get through this year and make it good and we’ll see what comes about. That’s all we’re trying to do,” he said in a previous report.
Actress Nina Dobrev earlier left the show. She played Elena Gilbert, the romantic interest of Somerhalder’s character Damon Salvatore.
What do you think? Does the actor sound desperate for viewers? Will we see more of “Vampire Diaries?” Or will this be the end for the show? Stay tuned for updates.
