The fight cards for UFC 205 are slowly taking shape. Donald Cerrone vs Robbie Lawler has been confirmed as a featured welterweight bout. The fight will be part of the event’s main card, but the headliners have not yet been named.
UFC 205 is scheduled to take place on Nov. 12, 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event is highly anticipated due to the recent ruling to lift the ban on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events in New York.
MMA Junkie reports that UFC president Dana White has declared the Cerrone vs Lawler fight “official on paper.” Both fighters have gone up into the welterweight division this year after having previously fought as lightweights.
The pairing came about through a Twitter exchange just a few days ago. Fox Sports reporter Damon Martin revealed that Lawler had been asking Dana White for an opportunity to fight again. This came after Lawler was unceremoniously knocked out of his belt by Tyron Woodley in UFC 202. “Dana White says Robbie Lawler is calling him everyday trying to get a fight right now #UFCVancouver,” read the tweet, which was dated Aug. 28.
The tweet caught the attention of Donald Cerrone, who immediately volunteered himself as Lawler’s next opponent. Cerrone is eager to extend his three-bout winning streak. He is brimming with confidence after gathering a string of wins since jumping into the welterweight division. Lawler, meanwhile, will be eager to put his recent loss firmly behind him.
White took the Twitter bait, and appears to have taken immediate action. He has officially confirmed the fight just over a week after the online exchange. Clearly, large sports deals can now be facilitated through social media. The match is one of the first to be confirmed for UFC 205, which will be available via pay-per-view.
