Real Madrid team manager Zinedine Zidane gets a headache every time he needs to choose players for the club’s matches. With a lineup overflowing with superstars, he needs to make some tough decisions. This time around, Norwegian teenager Martin Odegaard made a surprise appearance in the team’s first UEFA Champions League group stage match for the season.
Real Madrid CF will be facing Sporting CP of Portugal on Sept. 14, 2016 at home at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Notably present in the team roster is Martin Odegaard. He has not seen a lot of first team action since being signed as a teen prodigy back in January 2015, and the Champions League selection comes as a big opportunity.
It remains to be seen if he will be getting a lot of playing time during the match, or if he will sit on the bench the entire time. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has caused some controversy in the past year, with his position in the team being unclear. While he plays for Real Madrid Castilla, or the B team, he has been training mostly with the first team.
During the summer transfer window, he was linked to a possible loan spell in the English Premier League. According to Give Me Sport, Ligue 1 team, Rennes was also interested in signing the Norwegian star. None of the deals came into fruition, and it seems that he has a fresh opportunity to cement his position in the Real Madrid squad. Being called up in an important UEFA Champions League match marks Zidane’s confidence in his abilities.
Also present in the match roster is Cristiano Ronaldo. Since recovering from a knee injury sustained during the Euro 2016 final, he has yet to feature in a competitive match for the club. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if he will make his comeback in the Champions League or in this weekend’s La Liga match against Osasuna.
