After much buzz and strong word of mouth, South Korean zombie masterpiece Train to Busan became a massive hit not only on its local shores but around the world. While most were content to join the bandwagon, others were more affected and can’t seem to get enough of it. This raised the question on whether a Train to Busan 2 is possible.

At this point, the thought is more of wishful thinking than actual possibility. However, that did not stop lead actor Gong Yoo from offering his perspective about a sequel.

According to a report from Soompi, Gong Yoo had this to say about a follow up to Train to Busan:

“I talked about this with Director Yeon Sang Ho, and I said that I thought my character Seok Woo might be living somewhere as a zombie. But Director Yeon said that when Seok Woo fell off the train, he broke his neck and died. But I suppose since Ma Dong Seok‘s character is living on as a zombie, they could do a sequel from his character’s perspective.”

True enough, in a heartbreaking turn of events, Gong Yoo’s character died in an effort to protect his daughter. However, the actor is correct in saying that the fate of Ma Dong-Seok’s character–Sang-hwa–was left open-ended.

Train to Busan 2 and the possibility of an aftermath story

Gong Yoo’s statement was simply his own opinion and doesn’t reflect an official confirmation for a sequel. However, his idea on Ma Dong-Seok’s character opens an interesting possibility.

If there was an MVP in the film, it would arguably be Sang-hwa. The character brought both humor and heart to the story. Furthermore, aside from being strong physically, his remaining moments as a human also showed how strong-willed he was.

Even after being bitten, he managed to fend off the infected long enough for his wife and Seok Woo to escape to the next car. Hence, if the aftermath of the outbreak led the South Korean government to look for a cure, it’s possible that some of the infected population can revert back to normal. Perhaps, Sang-hwa was able to retain his humanity deep down and the next film will revolve around his journey to transitioning back to being human.

It is important to note, though, that these are all speculations.
