Mayor Paul Antonio has indicated his desire to make Toowoomba free from pornography as he supports  an anti-pornography campaign.

The mayor has accepted that he finds “a city free from porn” an idealistic thought. Over 200 civic leaders have come up to support the campaign that claims pornography “kills true love.” The supporters also include students and workers who have experienced the impact of pornography personally. Hence, they have pledged to fight against the same and promise to get rid of porn.

“I daresay there will be some negative comments about it,” Antonio said. “But we must begin a journey with one step. I think what we’ve focused on today is the real value of proper relationships. Pornography has no place in that.”

Furthermore, pornography has been linked to the increase in violence against women. City Women Toowoomba Chief Executive Letitia Shelton told The Huffington Post that it was one of the main reasons that drove men to exploit women. “I won’t view porn and I will help create a city free from porn,” Shelton pledged. She said that the idea might sound “very ambitious and unlikely” but it was necessary to take the first step.

Shelton mentioned the impact of protests and criticisms against smoking. She said that the anti-smoking campaigns have led to a huge reduction in the rate of smoking. She added that her organization has been cooperating with the city leaders as well as the mayor to set up a porn-free city to make sure the rate of violence against women also gets reduced.

Antonio has requested men to “acknowledge that viewing pornography” leads to exploitation of women, thereby increasing the frequency of incidents of violence against women.

Toowoomba is known as the garden city that accommodates more than 100,000 people. Hence, both the public as well as political leaders are making attempts to make the environment in the city family friendly and free from indecent behaviors and anti-social elements.
